CastLab (Computer Architecture Systems Technology Laboratory) at KAIST advances modern computer systems through specialized hardware designed for the post-Moore’s law era. Our mission is to build high-performance and scalable computing platforms for future AI applications through holistic hardware design that spans circuits, architecture, systems, and technology. As the traditional scaling of computing performance reaches its limits, we pioneer memory-centric computing paradigms that address the fundamental bottleneck of data movement rather than computation speed.
We conduct comprehensive research across computer architecture, VLSI design, FPGA, hardware/software co-design, and processing-in-memory technologies. Our holistic design approach integrates multiple levels of hardware design to optimize overall system performance, bridging the gap between academic research and practical industry deployment. This philosophy emerges from our unique combination of rigorous academic research and real-world hyperscale deployment experience.
Led by Professor Joo-Young Kim, our laboratory brings a unique perspective combining academic excellence with industry experience. As an original member of Microsoft’s Project Catapult, Professor Kim pioneered cloud-scale FPGA deployment for machine learning, data storage, and networking acceleration. This background provides invaluable insights into the practical challenges of deploying specialized hardware at hyperscale, informing our research direction toward solutions that bridge academic innovation with commercial viability.
